Railroad Watch

Part of my Fathers history is recorded with the fiddle. My Father and Mother had known each other almost all their life. They were married in 1945 after Dad was discharged from the Navy. He had a brief job working in the ship yard in Orange, TX. Shortly after that and about the time I was born in 1947 he became a fireman on a Santa Fe steam engine. As train technology improved he became a fireman on a diesel engine and eventually a diesel engineer. A precision watch is one of the most valued tools of a railroad man. This image is of my Dad’s Elgin watch positioned on a pair of the overalls he wore. The yellow pencil was used to mark his time book each day. More memories.

Lord Elgin

My dad’s watch. He got it when he got out of the Army after WWII, so it’s over sixty years old. I stupidly dropped it on my workshop floor, so it’s not running now. It’s going to get serviced, and the guy who is doing the work wanted to see a picture first so I took this one. It’s not super valuable, but it does have lots of sentimental value.
